HASTINGS ROAD ART GROUP
The Hastings Road Art Group was established 33 years ago by a number of friends who originally attended instructional paintings classes run by the local authority at Abbeydale Hall. Eventually they felt that these classes could no longer meet their needs. Consequently they found premises in the Scout Hut in Hastings Road, which would provide the Group with its name.
A paid tutor took them forward in the development of their skills and the enterprise was successful from its conception, attracting new members. After a few years, members felt they no longer needed the services of a formal tutor and now follow their own individual styles.
The original wooden hut decayed and was eventually demolished. Retaining its well established name, the Group moved its venue to Ecclesall Parish Rooms for many years and, this January, has now moved to Dore and Totley U.R C.
Particularly respected in Sheffield’s amateur art scene, the Group remains a circle of friends with a common interest in painting. The number of members is limited both by studio space and by the desire to maintain mutually helpful and friendly relationships.
We meet on Thursday mornings for painting and, for six weeks in the summer, we meet to sketch at various venues in Sheffield and Derbyshire. We have an Annual Exhibition at Baslow Village Hall on the last Bank Holiday weekend in May.
